During World War II, the dunes were used as part of Australia’s coastal defence system — and remnants of that era, including tank traps, can still be found scattered along the shore. The beach is also home to the historic MV Sygna shipwreck, a striking steel structure that ran aground during a storm in 1974 and remains a popular photo stop today.
The area holds deep cultural significance for the Worimi people, the Traditional Custodians of the land. The dunes and surrounding region are part of the Worimi Conservation Lands, which are managed in partnership with NSW National Parks to protect both the environment and the heritage of this remarkable place.
