Stockton Bight Sand Dunes Port Stephens

Just a 25-minute drive from Heatherbrae Accommodation Village, Stockton Beach is one of New South Wales’ most remarkable coastal destinations — where golden dunes meet the sparkling waters of the Pacific. Stretching for over 30 kilometres between Stockton and Anna Bay, it’s a place where adventure, history, and natural beauty come together in one breathtaking landscape.

Adventure Awaits on the Dunes

Stockton Beach is famous for its incredible sand dunes — the largest moving coastal dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. Rising up to 30 metres high, these rolling hills of sand create a spectacular desert-like scene that’s become a playground for thrill-seekers. Jump aboard a 4WD or quad bike tour and race across the dunes, or try sandboarding down the slopes for pure family fun.

Prefer to slow things down? You can explore the dunes on foot, taking in panoramic ocean views that stretch as far as the eye can see. Early morning and sunset are the best times to visit, when the shifting light casts dramatic shadows across the sand.

A Beach with a Story to Tell

Beyond its beauty, Stockton Beach has a fascinating history. During World War II, the dunes were used as part of Australia’s coastal defence system — and remnants of that era, including tank traps, can still be found scattered along the shore. The beach is also home to the historic MV Sygna shipwreck, a striking steel structure that ran aground during a storm in 1974 and remains a popular photo stop today.

The area holds deep cultural significance for the Worimi people, the Traditional Custodians of the land. The dunes and surrounding region are part of the Worimi Conservation Lands, which are managed in partnership with NSW National Parks to protect both the environment and the heritage of this remarkable place.

Relax, Swim, or Cast a Line

For those seeking a quieter day, parts of Stockton Beach are perfect for swimming, fishing, or simply soaking up the sun. The long, open stretches of sand make it ideal for long walks or peaceful beach picnics. Whether you’re an adventure lover, history buff, or simply want to enjoy the coastline, Stockton Beach offers something for everyone.
